Chapter Ten

“What?” The question caught her off guard. How did Julie tell Luke that his memory was enough to stop her from being able to get close to any other man?

Should she tell him?

What could she possibly accomplish by pouring her soul out to the one man who’d stomped on her heart? Not to mention the fact that if a serial killer hadn’t brought Luke to her doorstep, they wouldn’t be speaking right now. If he’d come on his own terms, she could trust his feelings. But this? No.

“We’ve known each other for a while.”

“Oh.”

She steeled herself against the pain in his voice. Her heart begged her to tell him the truth. Herb was barely in the picture right now. No man before or since Luke had broken through her walls. He was her kryptonite.

Was that such a good thing?

He’d walked out once without looking back. What would stop him from doing it again?

Neither one seemed to feel like talking on the road. Julie didn’t. Not after what she’d seen. Then there were her mixed-up feelings for Luke to contend with. Being with him was the first time she’d felt home in years—ever. And yet, her mind couldn’t wrap around making the same mistake twice. What was that old saying? Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Sure it was a cliché, but it worked for her.

She closed her eyes and leaned her head against the headrest. Images assaulted her. She rubbed her eyes and then opened them.

Luke pulled into a parking garage, found a spot and then cut the engine. “What is it, Julie?”

“This. My life. It’s so screwed up that I can’t begin to sort through it.” She wasn’t just talking about Rob, but she didn’t want Luke to know. She wasn’t ready to discuss their relationship—a relationship that confused her as much as comforted her. “Where are we?”

“Safe house.” He hopped out and was at her side before she could reach for the door handle. His lips were curved in a frown. His disposition had shifted to dark and moody.

Was he still bothered by her admission? False or not, she’d done her best to sell it.

The parking garage was active. Well-dressed couples held hands, walking toward either the elevator or the stairs.

“Where are we?”

“There are condos above the shops on this street. This garage will conceal my truck.”

“It’s busy here. Is it safe to get out?”

“We’ll blend in.” He placed his hand on the small of her back and electricity shot through her. Unfair that his touch could heat her body so easily.

They moved to the street and into the crowd of fortysomethings as they made their way down the tree-lined road. There were plenty of couples, but single people were abundant, too. Small groups of women looked as if they were out for girls’ night. Pairs of men were on the hunt. The place was bustling with restaurants and shops.

“What time is it?” Julie had barely noticed that it had become dark outside.
